– Además de otras enfermedades crónicas, según advierten investigadores

El incremento de cáncer y otras enfermedades crónico- degenerativas como diabetes, hipertensión arterial, insuficiencia renal crónica y algunos problemas neurológicos, así como alteraciones metabólicas, están asociados al uso indiscriminado de plaguicidas organoclorados en la región Ciénega de Chapala, ya que su toxicidad permanece en el ambiente de 20 a 30 años.
Señaló María Antonieta Ochoa Ocaña, investigadora en temas agrícolas, añadió que esta situación se advierte en el libro virtual «Plaguicidas y salud en Cojumatlán de Regules”, en el que participaron 12 académicos de diversas instituciones de investigación del país.
En la obra los investigadores ponen de manifiesto que el uso desmedido y creciente de fertilizantes y plaguicidas afecta la calidad del agua, del suelo, del ambiente y de la productividad; además de que han originado riesgos a la salud y un grave deterioro ecológico.
Esta publicación se realizó bajo la coordinación de José Luis Sefoo Luján, especialista en temas agrícolas, y la investigadora ya señalada, «el libro busca un contexto integral, se hace un recorrido por las cuestiones bioéticas, el marco legal, generalidades del universo de estudio, el conflicto que tiene tanto el lugar de estudio como la región en términos de exposición a plaguicidas y finalmente aterrizamos en los daños por la exposición de estos».
Ochoa Ocaña indicó que el uso excesivo de organoclorados no sólo afecta a los trabajadores del campo, sino también a los consumidores de derivados lácteos, de hortalizas y de los productos de la pesca; principales actividades económicas del municipio citado, considerado uno de los 6 que integran la región Ciénega de Chapala.
Lamentó que en Cojumatlán se identificaron los niveles más altos en el país de aldrin, «se trata de un organoclorado plaguicida que ya está prohibido, sin embargo, se sigue produciendo y utilizando, bajo el argumento «que es el antibiótico por excelencia para la tierra», dijo irónicamente.
Señaló que, en México, como en la gran mayoría de países en desarrollo, la falta de aplicaciones efectivas en materia de regulación y el bajo nivel educativo del sector dedicado a las actividades agrícolas, elevan el daño potencial de estos compuestos que se manifiestan en entornos naturales y en la salud de las poblaciones humanas.
Aseguró que, en México, a partir de 1992, se ha estudiado a través de biomarcadores el daño celular que provocan los plaguicidas en trabajadores agrícolas o en población expuesta directa o indirectamente, lo ocasionó hacerlos más vulnerables a padecer las patologías ya citadas, que han ido más allá de las intoxicaciones agudas.
Dijo que Cojumatlán de Regules es un municipio que por más de 60 años se dedica a una agricultura inclinada hacia la producción de hortalizas, las cuales demandan grandes cantidades de plaguicidas, «en comparación con los granos como el frijol o el maíz, las hortalizas ocupan hasta 5 veces más de plaguicidas».
«Estas hortalizas que demandan gran cantidad de químicos, abastecen a los consumidores de Guadalajara, Jalisco, y en menor proporción al mercado regional de esta parte de Michoacán. Destaca también esta localidad por la transformación de productos pesqueros y derivados lácteos», finalizó.
