El bajo consumo de fibra junto con el elevado consumo de tabaco, la comida chatarra y el alcohol, al igual que la genética (desorden genético en la proteína 53), son factores pre disponentes para desencadenar cáncer de colon, tumor que se origina en el trayecto de este intestino. Ya sea en la parte ascendente trasversa cuya función es la absorción de agua y electrolitos (sodio, potasio, etc.) o en la parte descendente y rectal encargada de almacenamiento de materias fecales, hasta su expulsión por el ano, señaló Mario Alberto Méndez, encargado del área de urgencias del Hospital General de Zamora (HGZ).
Dijo que los tumores son considerados la cuarta causa de muerte en el país, le anteceden las enfermedades crónico- degenerativas, las cardiovasculares y los accidentes. También son más susceptibles a desencadenar cáncer de colon las personas que tienen colitis ulcerosa crónica inespecífica y síndrome de colon irritable y estreñimiento crónico, padecimientos concomitantes o que se relacionan con este tumor. Los principales síntomas del cáncer de colon son: dolor abdominal crónico, constipación intestinal, pérdida de peso, producción de heces delgadas, nauseas, malestar general; así como evacuaciones diarreicas con sangre.
De cada mil personas, un 1.2 % de la población tiene cáncer de colon, patología que afecta principalmente a hombres mayores de 50 años. Por cada 2 hombres afectados hay una mujer. Es recomendable evitar el sedentarismo y por otro lado consumir fibras en cantidades elevadas ya que favorecen la no producción de las encimas cancerígenas. Los alimentos que la contienen son: maíz, acelgas, coliflores, lentejas, espinacas, cereales, etcétera. En contraste, las nitrosaminas, como son los churritos, los alimentos fritos, grasas, conservadores, las carnes rojas y la comida chatarra son sustancias pre-cancerígenas que con los años producen células anormales que ocasionan diferentes tipos de cáncer.
